What are the impacts of using insurance versus self-pay?
-
Insurance companies have very high standards for documentation to justify paying for services. When using insurance, there will be additional steps and documentation for us to complete to meet those standards. For example, Medicaid requires that we identify a diagnosis, develop a treatment plan, and review the treatment plan every 90 days. When clients pay out of pocket, these requirements become optional and can be adjusted according to your preferences.
-
All insurances require that I provide a diagnosis for all clients to "justify" the services. If you would prefer to forgo the diagnosis, we can take the self-pay route.
-
Anyone who is connected to an insurance plan, such as the policy holder, may have access to specific information about services provided and billed. While they will not have direct access to clinical documentation, policy holders may be able to identify that the client is attending mental health services and see the charges on the insurance account. If you would prefer to maintain complete privacy regarding treatment, consider if you are okay with the policy holder having access to that information.
-
Insurance companies set many rules and boundaries regarding mental health treatment, such as frequency of sessions, when and where services can be provided, and how many sessions can be provided in a particular time period. Most of the time, these boundaries are not a problem and do not limit a client's ability to personalize their treatment experience. We can chat more about these boundaries if you have additional questions.
do i need a referral?
Referrals are not required! Self-referral is always an option. If you have Medicaid and your primary care provider sends a referral to me directly, I am required by Medicaid to complete the remainder of the referral form and return it to them to notify them that you have begun mental health services.
